UNDERSTANDING SPECIAL NEEDS AND YOUR RIGHTS

Special needs is defined as any of various difficulties (such as a physical, emotional, behavioral, or learning disability or impairment) that causes an individual to require additional or specialized services or accommodations (such as in education or recreation).

Tips for Parents that have no diagnosis or resources to assist their child:
  • if you suspect your child has a special need, that’s ok. Let’s do some follow up and gain as much knowledge and understanding of this process as possible. The early you detect it and start, the better. Depending on the age of your child will determine where and how you start. If your child is under the age of 5, start with a developmental pediatrician and have the child evaluation by that specialist. You want to make sure that your child is developing on target, or note if there are some atypical developments.
  • Don’t get upset with the school if they didn’t identify your child’s special needs first. They can’t always see what we can as parents. Just simply notify the school and let them know that you want to have your child test and evaluated for special education and accommodations.
  • You can also follow up with your local Child Guidance Resource center to have a behavioral and psychology evaluation completed as well. Having a thorough assessment in all areas will help to rule out what it may not be and give you a clear picture of what it could be.
  • Keep in mind that a diagnosis does not mean that things will get easier and now your child will be able to get through school with the proper help.
  • You will have to prepare for twist and turns and maybe battle. Educate yourself as it relates to your child special needs. Keep good records of what you’ve done and document any and all symptoms and behaviors that you witness with you child experiencing on a daily and consistent basis
  • Keep a journal, specific with dates and times of interactions, occurrences, appointments and direct quotes and statements of professionals.
  • Be your child’s voice and advocate on their behalf. You know your child and you know what specific needs they have.
  • Do not let anyone tell you what will be done for your child especially if you don’t agree with it. If you feel that there is something that your child needs that could benefit their growth and learning process, speak up!
  • Please do not fall into that belief that it is the schools responsibility or the therapist/social workers responsibility to fix your child. It is a collaborative effort and you must be active and involved. Learn all that you can about what is going on with your child and to be the best advocate that you can for them.
